Hi all:
Will a Carter W1 "fit" with a early 30s Essex Super six?
Let me state first that my car already has a Carter RBB (and so is adapted for downdraft), but my carburetor is just terrible.
I realize the Carter W1 isn't ideal, but what I want to learn is whether or not it is "workable"?
Thanks much.

It may be workable, but the Carter is 1-1/2" throat, which may be too big for the Essex, and you may have trouble getting it running lean enough. It would be better if you could get a more "Univesal" carby with an adjustable main jet.
Geoff.

Thanks Geoff.
This may explain why I am having a difficult time with the present set up. The Carter RBB that I have also has a large throat, and the car just runs rough (very poor acceleration under power). There is an "accelerator" pump on the carb for just this purpose, and it is noticeably tired. I'm trying a rebuilt RBB to see if that helps, but the Carter W-1 is a possible alternative. Thanks for the input. Eric

Is it that you are looking for an authentic original carburetor and having no luck? Or, have you concluded that the original type was a dud and you're seeking an upgrade to something better?

Hi Jon:
When I purchased the car, it came only with the Carter RBB set up as a downdraft. There was also no Stewarts Vacuum Pump. Ideally, I'd love to return the car to the original Marvel or Carter (if necessary) set up as an updraft, but I'm told that I also need a heat(?) piece that would go between the throat of the carburetor and the intake manifold. This is missing from my car. Everything else on my car appears to be original.

The Carburetor Shop offers NOS ''heat riser tubes" for late 1920's Marvel carburetors. I'm not sure whether this is the part you need. They might even have the carb you need. http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Orderinfo.htm
