Ok,I know to put 90 weight grease in the tranny, but the overdrive part I was told to put in motor oil. Is this correct??:confused:

I've never heard that! I've been using standard gear oil from the auto supply, in my overdrive since 1978. 85-140 is what's in there now.

That sounds good to me! A freind of mine has a 53' Studebaker truck with overdrive and that is what he is running in his overdrive unit. I thought it sounded a little crazy myself.

Particularly silly, in view of the fact that the gearbox and transmission share the same oil supply.

Geoff is correct as usual. Make sure you check both the transmission AND the OD. I ruined a S/W Od in a Studebaker many years ago when i didn't realize the rear seal had allowed the OD to run dry . There was still enough lube captured in the transmission to save it's gears. The repair job cost a lot more than the seal would have.:eek:

Geoff---The 41 O/D transmission has 2 separate drains & fill plugs for the gear oil. I do not know about the later ones. I will go with Jon who uses the 85/140 weight gear oil by Lucas.---Cliff Minard.

That is what my transmission has is 2 filler plugs. Do I put 85/140 gear oil in both compartments??

That's right Cliff, but the transmission and overdrive housings are open to each other, so they share the same oil. Obviously you can't drain either one from the other drain bung, but the levels are the same. As mentioned, if the rear seal should go, then the overdrive would eventually run dry, and oil from the transmission would eventually also get pumped out. so always investigate the cause of oil leaks under the car.
