I placed this under the GM section before I saw the Pontiac site. Glad we have our own area here!

I need to replace the gas tank on the Chieftain.
I can find new custom stainless units but don't want to spend that much. I have made several phone calls to people that advertise in Hemmings but no luck.
Anyone have one that is in decent shape, or know of a place to purchase a reproduction unit?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom, Don't know if this helps but Hollanders shows this unit is the same as the 54 unit. 53-4 will all interchange on passenger cars. No station wagons or sedan deliveries though.

Just a update--

I was unable to find a replacement tank, new or used, so I when the repair route.
I found a local guy that cut out the bad corner and welded in a corner from a donor tank he had.
He patched all the pinholes he found and cleaned out the inside while the corner was removed with a media blaster.
I did see some more pin holes by shining a shop light and looking inside the tank so I purchased a tank liner kit from NAPA( Northeren supply is the manufacturer) and used it.
I have it just sitting and curing now so I am hoping for the best!.
I also purchased a quart of truck bed liner and coated the outside of the tank. I may have gotten by with just doing that in the first place without using the liner.

I should put the tank in this weekend and will wait another week before I put gas in it.

Total expence is has been about $130.00 to do this.

Good to see that you got it resolved.

Repairing them works well as long as you take your time to do it right. I just did one this past summer on a 34 Ford and have done several others prior that have held up just fine.

Is it cruise time yet????

Enjoy the journey

I feel we got a good repair on it so it should be good to go. Thought for awhile I was just going to have the local welding shop make one but that was a last resort. I am trying to keep the car as original as we can. It would have bothered me knowing that I had a homemade tank under her, even though I would be the only one that would know.

Cruise time is just around the corner , I HOPE!
Today was to be 50 degrees but ended up with a 50 MPH wind and 25 degrees.

POCI meet is in the Black Hills this year so we plan on that one for sure, plus all the local cruises and shows.

Local Car Club car show is the last weekend of this month so I am humping to get it all ready. should be about 300 cars there.

Damn, I don't know why I took so many things apart at one time. Just like last year, and the year before if I remember right.
