I have a rebuilt chevy 350 that doesn't appear to keep oil pressure. I can prime the oil pump with out running the engine and get oil all the way up to the rockers. Once I insert the distributor I can run the motor and drive the car. If I leave the car sit for a day it won't start right away and I have to crank the motor for a while before it starts. I have checked the gas to the carb and it is working fine. It seems like the lifters loose there pressure and colapse a little until they get primed again. If the car sits for about 3 or 4 days it will not start at all. If I take the distributor out and prime the oil pump it will start up fairly easy. Did some how a plug or something in the oil system get forgotten? Anyone have any possible solutions to this problem?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts

Your problem is unlikely to be oil pressure related. I have run into this similar problem a few times. The fuel system is leaking excess fuel into your crankcase is my best guess. The oil is diluted so that is why the lifters are making noise. The building up of oil pressure shouldn't do a whole lot other than stir in the gas and/or disrupt the crankcase vapor. If its fuel injected check out the pressure regulator, if its carbureted look for a sunken float or debris behind the needle.

I am 99% sure that is your problem. I've been there.

Have found no gas in the oil.

Have you tried re-adjusting the valves?

What is the oil pressure when the car is running?

Have you checked other things like the choke?

Does the car crank with the proper amount of speed or does it crank slowly?

What condition is the oil in?

Will it start on a daily basis?

The oil is brand new 10/30. The engine cranks over fine and it has spark. This motor has only about 20 miles on it. The oil pressure is at about 60 when it's running.
Like I had said in the posting that if it sits for a couple of days I could sit and crank it till the battery goes dead. If I take the distributor out and prime the pump for a little while and then put the distributor back in it will start. This leaves me to believe that the lifter are draining down while it sits. These lifter are brand new from Comp Cam.
