I'm pulling the head on a 1940 Splasher 6 to remove the valves to replace the fiber camshaft spacer. Most of the head studs stayed in the block, with the nuts coming off, but about 4 came out as studs. Is there any special thing to do other than remove the nuts on the bench and then put the studs back in the block?
A few other questions:
1. What should the new homemade spacer be made from?
2. How does one determine if the camshaft bearings are worn?
Thanks..Paul.

If the studs are in good shape other than coming out of the block I would soak them in penetrating oil and remove the nuts, on the bench. I would however replace all the nuts and washers with new ones. When replacing the studs use something like Loc-tite stud and bearing lube.
