alternator that looks like a generator?

So, for those of us wanting to keep an original look, yet still upgrade to a 12V alternator system, does anyone manufacturer alternators that look like original generators from the outside?

Ahhh, thanks for the info. At $900 bucks a unit though, I'm not sure I'm THAT much of a purist? Maybe if it was warrantied for life, but probably not even then...

How about just upgrading to 12 volts with a generator instead of alternator? I think the biggest problem with starting, lights, etc. is the high current requirement for 6 volts vs. 12, not with how the battery gets charged. Alternators are necessary for high current loads, but if you're interested in keeping it stock-looking, then you probably don't have any electricals beyond the old basic stuff, and 12 volts with a generator, together with the existing 6 volt heavier wire, should work fine for you. As always, if I'm missing something here (Park or Russ or Dave or anyone) feel free to chime in.

What's wrong with the original generator? These can be repaired, or replaced, and 6 volts works fine. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

The advantages of an alternator over a generator are that the alt's are much more trouble free, and they put out at least some charge current at idle speeds. There are some legitimate benefits to going to 12v, such as brighter lights and the ability to buy a replacement bulb or headlight unit just about anywhere. Or the ability to support A/C. But "So it will start easier" is not a good reason to switch. If it won't crank pretty well and start almost instantly on 6v, something's not right, and can probably be made right without converting to 12v.

I've been running a 12v generator for a few years and it works well. However I'm about to power a few more accessories and wonder how long my lcuk will hold out. -Chris
