1963 Impala Sport Coupe

We're trying to find the VIN of an Impala, It's not on the body pillar like it should be. We've remade most of it from the body plate. 31847(A|T)10XXXX. Where's another place we could look on the car, OR, which of the letters on the body plate indicates the assembly plant? It reads "BODY AT (SEQ NUM)". Also, We've heard that the VIN may be on a plate affixed to the top of the fuel tank, Whether this is true or a funny joke we're not sure yet. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I've never heard of them on the gas tank. I doubt that any manufacturer would put one there. After all, the gas tank can be changed and you would lose your V.I.N. then.

It's not easy to do but if you can look at the top of the frame about where the front drivers seat is at, you should find it there I believe.

You might also try www.348-409.com. It's a site that deals mostly with the 348 and 409 engines and the cars they came in but they are also very knowledgable about Chevrolets in general. I'm sure someone on that site could give you some very useful information.
