Okay i am new at this. When i say that i mean building classic cars and using forums. I currently own a 1968 mustang and the engine is smoking so i built a 347 roller motor with a lunati stroker kit. The engine will be receicing a set of brodix aluminum heads st 5.0 with 60cc chambers. I understand that i should have about a 10.1:1 compression with this engine. I am running a victor jr. intake manifold with a street strip carb. that is a 650 body with a 830 base plate. It is a specialty carb built for the application i was told that it would give me good idle around town and the when it gets opened up it gives me the power and flow of and 830. i am running a stock c4 with a 3500 RPM tci street fighter torq. conv. Also, i will be running a shorty style header with 1 3/4" pri and 3 inch collector.
Which bring me to my questions, what rear end should i use? How can i tell if the rear i have is an open or limited slip and what is the major difference between the ford 9" and the 8.8"?

Also, what else should i think about for more power and or torque?

The 9" has a drop out third member that you can reach all bolts with a deep well socket. The 8" which you should have in your Mustang is also a drop out third member but needs a wrench to loosen two bolts on the bottom. The 8.8" axle does not drop out but has a cover on the back of the housing. It was used for later Mustangs, etc. The 8" will probably hold up for a while but you should update to the 8.8 or 9" (preferably) eventually. Both of these updates will require that you change out the whole rear axle assembly. I hope this helps.
