I have a 1966 chevelle with the inline 6 engine. I need to turn in the values but I don't know what order to do it in while the engine is off. I have a book that says the order when the engine is running and the order when the engine is off for a V-8 but a V-8 is different from a inline 6 so the book offers little help.
thank you for your help

The first thing you should do is get yourself a manual for your car. They are invaluable for doing most anything on the car.
1. Crank the engine until the distributor rotor points to the number one cylinder terminal with breaker points open. In this position the piston in number one cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke with both lifters on base circle of cam and both valves can be adjusted.
2. Turn the adjusting nut until all lash is removed from the valves. This can be determined by checking the push rod side play by hand while turning the adjusting nut. At this point turn the adjusting nut one more turn to place the lifter plunger in the center of it's travel.
3. Follow thses steps for each cylinder.
