Didn't the six have the big optional can type filter like the 216? Also the same type on the 55 265 V8?

Billy is right. The 235 inline 6 had an 'optional' filter and it bolted to the intake manifold just forward of the carb. They used a drop in filter. When changing the oil you had to suck the oil out with a bulb type syringe. The six didn't have a provision for a filter until 1963.

Can you adapt the filter from a 1963-newer 235 onto a early 235? I would like to have a "normal" oil filter.

If you mean, the type that spins onto the block, no. Chevy offered the optional filter set.up back in the '40's thru the 60's. The units aren't that hard to find or mount.
There may be some modern type in-line spin-on filters available, but the factory spin-on types are a part of the block casting. I think I'm right on this.

Aftermarket 'Remote filters' are available. They mount on the firewall or inner fender and the lines run from the block to the filter. It's built to use a spin on filter. Check with Summit or Jegs. Perhaps even J.C. Whitney?
