I don't think its a 300 Hoss with a 2 barrel. It should have a quadrajet, for anywhere close to that HP. Not even sure that they offered that HP in '70. The 2 bbl engines were low HP economy motors with low compression heads, etc. The 300 HP motors that I have had had either a Carter AFB, Holley or a quadrajet carb, double bump heads, hotter cam, etc. I'm sure there are others out there in the know that may post with better info than my 30 year old info. Good luck with it. My Nephew had a '71 Impala2-door hardtop (custom coupe)back a few years ago.

Billy: First of all I thank you for your input. After further research on the net, I found an article in "Road Test" magazine (May 1970 issue) that rated these cars. The article says the basic V8 mill available was a 250h turbofire 350 followed by a 300h 350, then a 265h 400, a 345h 454 and finally a 390h 454. I find another source wich says the basic mill was a 307??? Wich 350 do I have? How can I tell?

Chevynut, Look on the front of the engine just in front of the passenger side head. There will be a small flat area with stamped number and letters. Note the letters that end the number and go to this site and look up the letter code. http://www.nastyz28.com/spmenu.html (Suffix codes)

Have you tried looking up the casting numbers?
Try Mortec .com
They list a lot of info
