I have a friend who just picked up a 55 Chevy wagon. He claims it is a handyman but what exactly makes a handyman different from a regular station wagon/delivery? Is it how the rear door opens... ie split window and gate, one piece hinge down, one piece sideways? He agrees that it is not a nomad atleast but I would like to know the facts.

The handyman wagon is a two door model with a tail gate and lift up rear window.

so does that mean handyman is like the model name they used for "station wagon" in '55?

Yes, it was the basic model station wagon going back to at least 1953.
