View Full Version : Flathead Valve Guides - replace or bore & reline?

I'm in the process of rebuilding the flathead six from my '36 Dodge. I recently spoke to a machinist about having some of the usual shop work done on the block (boiling, installing cam bearings, valve seats and new guides, etc). I've accumulated all of the parts that it will need including valve guides. He suggested, however, that he could just as easily bore some material out my old guides (in place in the engine) enough to install new "valve guide liners". Perhaps this is a good idea because he would be using (I pressume) some new, modern wonder metal ideally suited for this purpose. The truth of the matter is that he simply wasn't all that forthcoming about which method would best in the long run. In my limited experience this just isn't something that I've run into before. Do any of you have any insight to share?

Not much for insight here James but I, like you would wonder about the best procedure too. I'm always leary about people that will not give enough information, especially when they are to be doing something for me. I feel that if they will not give a full enough explanation I start to wonder.
I think I would check with a few other shops to see what they have to say.

Ron, I also have a fondness for Hudsons. Because this same valve guide issue will also be relevant to a Hudson flathead eight I'll be rebuilding soon I decided to ask my question on the Hudson sight. I'm pleased with the info that I received there. You are certainly welcome to take a look. I know that I should be able to insert a page link here, but I'm not all that computer literate. Perhaps if you would just click "Forums" on the top of the page, then drop down to "Hudson" (under independent or orphan makes) you'll find my thread. The Hudson site is a very busy site and I'm sure that you'll find plenty of interesting info that you can extrapolate for use on other brands of cars.
