I am working on machining a 1972 olds 350. I went online to find some rebuild kits, and as much info as i could. Then i came across a kit for a 350R. I was wondering if someone could tell me the difference between these two engines or at least a place to find some info on them. Thanks

The R is the engine designation code in the VIN # the 5th diget

db is correct. You need to check the V.I.N. number 5th digit to be sure of the engine you have. These were the days when the general put any 350 in any of his cars, hence you could have an Olds engine in your Chevy, or any other combination.

As I checked my books, all I could find is that Olds had a 350R code engine from 77 - 80.

R could verywell be for a 77. parts catalog for 72 says H or J for 350 2bbl, K or M for 350 4bbl
