View Full Version : K&N FILTER ELEMENT

Okay, guys;
Looking for a better replacement for those wire mesh filter elements on your Hudson? K&N part number E-2550 will bolt right in place on those '48-54 transverse-mounted air cleaners, including Twin-H and Jet. Obviously this only applies to the non-oil bath type air cleaner assemblies. The best part is that in addition to great flow, K&N elements are "rechargeable" (cleanable) using one of their reasonably priced recharge kits. :D

Thanks for researching that! For the benefit of those with older Hudsons, could you please list the outside diameter, inside diameter and height? Possibly these might fit some of the pre-StepDown aire cleaners as well.

I'll have to take the measurements. If I don't get to that right away, it's possible that K&N has those dimensions on their website, as well. I seem to remember that the application they list for that P/N is for some early 70's Fiats.

Here are the dimensions of the K&N filter element E-2550 as shown on their website; O.D.=7.0", I.D.=5.188", Height=3.125". This O.D. is slightly larger than the stock wire mesh insert, which actually works pretty slick because the thick rubber sealing surface sits right where it needs to seal well. This also makes up for the slightly shorter height, making the whole installation look O.E.M. without any mods. If you're skeptical and want to see how it looks installed, e-mail me for a picture.

Please post a picture I would like to see this for my Twin H setup. Thanks

Well, unfortunately it doesn't fit the 1937 models (I happened to have my air cleaner nearby!). But it's great that such an item is available to Step-Down owners. It's pretty messy cleaning those old elements with turpentine, then oiling them down again.

How much do they cost?

Try NAPA Gold # 2110; cheap and very good!!

Sorry, I haven't figured out how to shrink my images so they'll fit the limits on the forum. Guess I'm much more comfortable wrenching on an old flathead six...

Hudson308; try this if you like; this is what Wesley sent to me via e-mail. Good luck

"I'll tell you how "I" re-size them. Hopefully, it works the same way on
your computer.

1. Go to where the picture is listed. For me, I click "My Documents", then
"My Pictures". This brings me to the "LIST" of all my pictures
2. Move your cursor to the picture you want to re-size, and "RIGHT CLICK"
on the list. A small screen should appear, click on "re-size picture".
3. Another screen should appear, click on "advanced", then "custom.
4. You will then see 2 sets of numbers in "boxes". Change these numbers to
smaller numbers, to make the picture file smaller. Usually, it originally
reads something like 1024 x 1056. Change these numbers to
........oh........try around 560 x 560. Click "OK".
5. Now, move the curser to "BACK", click, then "forward", click. Now, you
should have 2 pictures listed of the same picture. The original, and the
resized. Check the "KB" size. This number has to be below 38, to be able
to post on the Hudson Forum.

Let's say it comes out to be 45KB. Just right click, from the list, the
smaller photo you made, and delete it. Then start over, and use "smaller"
numbers in the "CUSTOM" boxes, till you get it the size you need.

You can make small pictures larger, but the larger you go, the grain-e-er
they will look.

Some people send files so large, you have to scroll from left to right, to
see the whole car. By making the file smaller, you car see all the car, at
once.

Hope this works for you."

No dice. I don't get the "resize" option on the list when I right-click on the file. I can't even get a resize option when I go through the "properties" dialogue boxes. I'm sure it has to do with the application that I open these with, but none of the other applications used to open jpegs on this computer has the resize option, either. Of course, I could e-mail the image to one of you guys, but that wouldn't "teach me to fish", now would it?

When you right click on the file do you see edit? Should be third option down. Hit that it will open it in paint then go to menu "Image" then hit attributes you will see a box that allows you to change the image size then try resizing by say trying 400x320 or someting like that it will tell you how big the file now is. Save it as something new so you don't screw your original.

Thanks for the K&N number. I just ordered mine ... I'm curious to see if they breathe any better than the old filters. I'm positive they will keep dirt out better.

All right, I think I figured out how to post pics. This isn't a great one, but in the upper right corner you can see the K&N element in the stock air cleaner housing.

Yep, you did it. Now, if you go into the "advanced" reply-to-thread area, you will be able to put the pictures into the thread:

I just opened your link, right-clicked on the picture, selected copy, then pasted it into this thread... It means you need to have two IE sessions open and go between them, but it works...

BTW - Very, very nice. Would like to see more pictures!

Okay... how do I post the pictures directly in this message? And how do you guys get the thumbnail next to your name?Here is a thread where I went into some detail on that subject (my second post, about 1/2 way down the page) -

Just an FYI - The forum admin has opened an area for pictures, which will enable us to put bigger pictures in our threads -
http://www.classiccar.com/upload.php (http://www.classiccar.com/upload.php)

I've put a few out there already (and have already been denied once, with too large a picture - maximum size is about 100k...). Here's the thread on the 'new' feature - Looks like "Chaz" was the 'instigator'...:D

The 'Avatar' (the picture beside the name) is a "custom". You can use any picture you would like, but -
"The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller)."

I just:
- Took a photo of my truck and reduced it to 80x80 pixels;
- Opened up "User CP" (upper-left side of the forum screen);
- Clicked-on "Edit Avatar", and uploaded the picture (bottom of the page).

Hope this helps. If you need assistance in reducing the picture, email it to me and I'll see what I can do.
