Newbie needs help - What year is this truck?

Hello all! I'm new to the forum and I have a question.. My husband recently bought an old General Motor Truck for $50.. We do not know what year the truck is.. We are guessing about 1946.. but really want to know for sure. Is there any way yall can help? BTW, do trucks that old actually have a VIN #?? I have the serial and model numbers, but we could not find a VIN? The Model # is CC303 and the serial number is 45309 . Thanks for any help.

Hello all! Glad to see that I'm not the only on stumped.. I did find a site and I think I have the year down. According to the model and serial numbers this is a 1942 model.. Anyone think I'm wrong?? Please let me know.

I'm confused. Although your picture clearly shows a General Motors Truck signature along the hood side, the vehicle's grille and front end belong to a 1941-47 Chevy.

That is a 1941-1947 1st Series Chevy. The serial number IS the VIN number. Be careful, some states used the engine number as the number on the title. The term VIN (vehicle ID number) didn't exist until the early '70s.

Judging from the lack of chrome, it is either a '41 or a '42, but it could be a ''43, '44, or a '45, since a handful of the heavier (1-1/2 - 3-ton) trucks were built for the civilian market, but very few..You also have a GMC hood on your truck, judging from the large spear on the side.

Your serial number should look something like this: 21GDK10020

It is on a tag riveted to the passenger side cowl, visible as you open the hood. Go to stovebolt.com and you'll learn all kinds of info about these trucks: http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/VIN.htm

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused. I have tried to find another GMC around the same year with the same grill and I have had NO luck. We really don't know much about the truck, so someone could have installed a Chevy Grill on the GMC.. I really don't know much about any of this. My husband is the mechanic, and I'm the computer nerd.. so maybe between us we can figure this out :) Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the info.. I could be wrong, but I believe that the serial number tag listed the truck as a GMC. It had the Model as CC303 Serial 45309 Max Wt 14000 and horse power - 87 @ 3000 RPM..
Do you know of a way that I can find more information about this model?? I appreciate all the help and advise.. This site and the Stovebolt site have been were I have gotten most of my information. I also went to www.oldgmctrucks.com and it explained the serial/model numbers.

According to Tad Burness' "The American Truck & Bus Spotter's Guide 1920-1985," A Model CC-303 is a GMC 1 1/2 ton truck from 1941-47. So I think you've got a GMC wearing a Chevy mask on the front end, rather than a Chevy with a GMC hood.

Amanda Amanda, That's not actually true. GM WAS making trucks... but they had OD green paint jobs and were not available to civilians. Good luck on your truck.
