Does anyone know a step by step instructions on how to properly install a HEI Distributor in a small block 350? I dont want to go out and buy a book. But if I have to, I will. Please Help!

i don't know about hei, but first thing is you are going to wanna set your engine at tdc on cyl #1. if you need to take an old pushrod and take off your valve cover to watch to make sure that both intake and exhaust are closed and use the pushrod to feel when it hits top. top is when you can turn the crank a little with out feeling the piston drop. if it drops just turn it back until it hits top again. then insert your distributor. make sure you marked your cap so you can put it back on right. and set your rotor so it is pointing at the #1 cylinder. you are going to have to turn it just a bit to get it to drop. and when it drops that should be it. if you get it in and your truck won't fire off, then its 180* or you have it too far advanced or retarded. if its 180* out then you had it where both valves were not closed. i personally find it alot easier to pull the valve cover off and make sure that the valves are all the way closed.

A simplified method would be to pull your current cap and mark the location of the rotor. Just make sure the HEI rotor ends up in the same location as the old one. Just make sure it ends up on the same spark plug wire, the new wires are in correct order (18436572) and you have twelve volts at the new ditributor when the key is in the start position. Points distributors use a resistance type wire or resister. HEI's do not need the resistance to work. You may want to run a new wire. If the distributor does not want to go down all the way, you will need to turn the oil pump rod a little. Use a very long screwdriver.
