Hey guys,
I got another problem with this dang ol' truck. It has the original speedometer for a 1966 Chevy C10. That cable is running from the original instrument cluster to a TH350 Tranny. I have a 4:1.1 Posi rear end. The speedometer cable keeps breaking (when I unscrew it from the tranny, the metal cable inside is wound up like a ball of yarn). Is it my speedometer gear? What should I do to fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Two possibilities. One the inner cable is a little too long and when you tighten the cable housing at the speedo and tranny it causes the cable to bind. The other could be the speedo head needs lube. Take the cable loose at the speedo and see how easy and smooth the speedo turns. Ever notice the speedo needle jumping?

If you install a new cable, be sure that you lube it properly at installation. After it's in, spin it by hand and see if you feel any roughness and that the speedometeer spins freely.

If it's wound up inside the housing, you may have a problem with the housing itself. The gear will not have anything to do with cable winding inside the housing other than spinning it.

Good luck

I bought a new cable and lubed up the console with white lithium grease. Then used the lube provided with the cable and did all that you guys said. It seems to be working just fine now. Thanks for your help.
