Hello Car lovers! I hope I am in the right place. I am looking for information on a 1962 or 63 Chevrolet Impala SS for my dad. He has his eyes on one and wanted to know some specifications about the engine. He says that the one that he looked at has a straight 6 cylinder engine and an automatic transmission, it is a 2 door hard top. He would like to know if this is common for the Impala, he doesn't think that it is because all the others that he has seen have 8 cylinder engines...
Im not an expert on cars or where to look up information so if you have an idea about this car or where I can go for resource information about it please share with me, and I will pass it on to my dad!
Take care everyone! Thanks in advance for any help you can offer about this beautiful classic car!

It wasn't at all unusual to find an Impala with a 6 cylinder. In 62 they had a 235 six that had been around for years. Then in 63 Chevrolet changed to a smaller engine using the same 235 CU IN displacement.
If one had a V8, it could be either a 283 or 327 CU IN.

Hey Mike...Didn't they also have 348/409 motors in the 62 and 63 models? I know they did in 64 but I was pretty sure that 62 and 63 had them too.

They did have 409s in the 61s (the first year for the 409), 62s, 63s, 64s, and even the 65s (the last year for the 409) but 61 was the last year for the 348 in the cars. And yes an Impala, even an Impala SS, could have the 6 cylinder. I never saw an Impala SS with one but it was available. I did see a '65 Malibu SS convertible with a 6 cylinder and a 3 speed on the column and couldn't help but feel it was a waste but to each his own I guess.
