Nice pictures Hudsonsoul, I know Press Kale has a '34 Pick-up that looks like the picture you posted. Anyone know of a delivery in existance, either '33 or '34?

From what I've read in the Butler book, 1933 is the earliest for production of commercial vehicles, other than the Dover series, which appear to have begun in 1929. There are multiple references to the factory or dealers converting other vehicles for hauling, delivery and other service related functions, but there are annotations that these were modified for internal use.

I have a Mar/Apr 1984 WTN which lists a 1933 Terraplane pick-up, as well as a Sedan Delivery and Panel Delivery vehicles. I might scan these and add them to my pictures.

46HudsonPU has a picture of my Dad's 46 pickup that I think is pretty factory correct. It's red with a CA lic# HUDSON 6. I've also heard of the trucks that were heavy duty had different rims? Anyone ever hear of this?

So other than Dover, and not counting dealer conversions, what is the oldest truck that Hudson made from the factory "with a box" on the back?

BB308,
Welcome, good to have you onboard!
I had written this, but somehow my computer went 'nuts' and erased my post just before I hit he 'Add Comment' button - so here it goes again...

You're probably correct on both counts. I took a look at the '46 Commercial Series Brochure (photos of it in my albums), and it appears that it had a different bumper (compared with cars shown in Butler's book), and I could not see any scripting on the hood. Then again, they are drawings, not actual photos. Larry Cramer (HET Commercial Register Manager) may be able to provide more insight on this.

Can you send me some photos of your pickup? Also possibly of the rivets? Honestly, I cannot recall seeing a pickup that did not have the logo on the hood, however going through my photos I can see at least a couple that look original and I do not see the logos on them...

Regards -
Rick

46HPU---I read your conversation w/ bent metal regarding p/u trim. I beg to differ, but the hood trim on my '47p/u has the rivets, not the "Hudson" and "Super Six" badges. My p/u is unrestored and w/ original paint. I have yet to see a P/u hood (original) with the badges attached by the factory. (We have owned or have friends with six '46-'47 pickups!) Could be that dealers added them.

Also, I think the pickup front bumper is quite different from an auto front bumper. Most I save seen (Again, original) were a thin blade. Take a look @ the bumper end over-rides andiI don't think there is any way to mount on a p/u bumper. I have seen many p/u's with auto bumpers, but again, I don't think that was factory.

My three cents' (inflation) worth!!

FYI
Tom

1. I belive that fender lights for trucks were a dealer installed option;
2. Pickup bumpers were the same as the car bumpers, however pickups only had front bumpers.
3. On the rear of the hood there was "Hudson" and 'Super Six' in chrome, one above the other, both sides. This was 46-47, unsure of earlier years but from what I've seen the '39 did not have this.
4. All fog lights were dealer installed, as were backup lights.

"Factory Correct" - Guess that would include any/all options offered by the dealer as well, but that is just an opinion. "Period Correct" would be anything that was available either by/thru the dealer or in the aftermarket, at the time or in the era.
I am constantly on the lookout for commercial documentation, but there is little of it. Seems that most options that were available for installation on a 'Super Six' car were also available on the pickup. The same could probably be said of the Commodore series as well - I don't think the dealers would turn down $ for installation of any options that they had or could install.

As far as trucks or commercial vehicles prior to 1934, there were. Look for Essex (quite a few converted from cars), and prior to that - the 'Dover' series.
