Just inherited a chevy caprise 33k original miles that hasn't been started for over 20 years. what are some of the functions I should prep prior to trying to start it? Anyone?

Motochevy. before doing any thing remove the plugs and pour a little bit of light oil down each of the cylinders. Let it sit for a bit to soak past the rings. Then try to turn the engine over by hand using the fan belt. You may have to tighten the belt extra snug first. Make sure you turn the engine a full 2 turns at a minimum. If all is well and the engine turns over by hand and you feel no grittyness or binding you should change out the fuel and the oil. connect a fresh battery and give it a little bit of a prime down the throat of the carb. If you confident all is well give the key a turn.

What kind of light oil and exactly how much oil??? Also will the fan belt be difficult to turn?

Motochevy. Use a light penetrating oil like WD-40 , Or if you have on hand a little deisel fuel will do. Just a cap down each hole will be fine. with the plugs out the engine should rotate with no problem if the engine is fine. Remember, while rotating the engine with the belt you'll be listening and most of all feeling for any grittyness or binding of the engine as it turns. You'll be able to feel the binding threw the fan belt.

I put light oil in the spark plugs holes. Just bought a new battery and now need to Change the oil and some how remove the existing gas.

I don't know what to bekieve. Some guy at pep bpoy in long I Island told me That after twenty year I am going to have to rebuild the engine, in other words it won't start according to him. and I will only damage the engine if i try.

Anyone out there have any advic. Any life long mechanics. I would appreciate it.

Motochevy, that's what the turning over of the engine by hand is all about. If it rotates freely with no grittyness or binding it will start and run smooth, your in the clear (for the most part). If you try it and it damages the engine you'll have to rebuild. As the fellow at the parts store suggests you're going to have to rebuild no matter what. You could just save yourself a lot of $$$$ if it will start and run.

put some "marvel mystry oil " in each plug hole let sit at least 2-3 hours, try to turn engine over from crankshaft pulley and half inch breaker bar and socket, after you turn over 2 complete times, put new plugs in. I've almost always disconnect fuel line from old tank, used a fuel can and hose direct to carb. and fire her up!! take out tank and send to a good rad. shop to boil out. you should not have any troubles..e-mail me if you need more help..
